Beyond the Sports Court Lines

How Sports Court Line Marking Positively Shapes Movement, Mindset and Everyday Life

The Riggotts team have decades of experience delivering high quality sports court line marking to support a variety of recreational activities for multi-use games areas (MUGA), we’ve installed everything from netball and basketball courts to tennis and pickleball courts! At first glance, these lines may seem simple, but they have a far more significant role than many people realise. Our professional line marking does more than just define boundaries, they also help to foster positive community experiences through promoting wellbeing, inclusivity and learning.

Whilst the physical health impact of sports cannot be understated, the social benefit can be even more profound. Beyond improving fitness, sports courts are a social hub that bring communities together. They are a place where friendships are forged, confidence is grown and a sense of purpose and belonging is fulfilled. Sports facilities are a vital resource within our communities, allowing people from all walks of life to share a safe space and connect through a common passion, tackling societal inequalities and enhancing community cohesion.

For our younger generations, it’s more important than ever to have avenues to be able to experience safe and positive social interactions. These spaces provide structure and opportunities to grow and develop essential life skills. Research conducted by the Department for Health at the University of Bath across 12 grassroots sports club highlight just how significant our community sports facilities can be. Of the 270 children asked if they felt a sense of belonging to their sports club, 74% strongly agreed and 23% agreed. Equally, when asked if they felt an emotional connection to their sports club, 68% strongly agreed and 27% agreed. It’s a heart-warming result that demonstrates that sports facilities aren’t just simply areas to play, their true value lies in the ability to build connection and grow a community.

More visibly, sports courts are a powerful platform for physical wellbeing – every line on the ground encourages movement. Regular participation in sports has positive returns on the human body including improved cardiovascular health, better bone density and increased muscle building. Further to these well-known benefits, sports is also key in developing crucial motor skills and co-ordination.

The impact of our sports line markings extends well beyond the individual. Investment in the community sports scene delivers substantial returns for wider public health services in the UK. Research carried out for Sport England has shown that the total social value generated by community sports and physical activity in England between 2023-2024 reached £122.9 billion. Of this, £106.9 billion was attributed to the improved wellbeing resulting from participation in sports and physical activity.

Sports and physical activity are proven to play a vital role in improving overall health and wellbeing and has been shown to prevent several ailments including but not limited to depression, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. By preventing and managing these long-term illnesses, sports deliver measurable savings to public services. Reduced GP visits alone amounted to huge savings of over £500 million, while over £800 million was saved due to reduced demand for mental health services.

Equally, the positive effects of movement on mental health cannot be underestimated – exercise is a natural mood booster that offers benefits far beyond physical fitness. Research carried out by Public Health England found that regular physical activity can improve overall quality of life and reduce the risk of depression by up to 30%. Sports activities stimulate the release of endorphins, often referred to as the ‘feel good chemical’, which helps to elevate mood. At the same time, exercise promotes mental clarity which in turn can help with factors including reducing stress levels, improving quality of sleep and strengthening self-esteem.

These figures underline the importance of sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s not only a positive investment for the individual, but for the wider community and economy.

Sports markings also play an important role in shaping positive behaviour and mannerisms. Each sport court is defined with clear lines and zones with their own set of rules. Defined markings reduce confusion and ensure that players remain compliant, lowering the risk of fouls and injuries. Well-marked courts enforce structure, encouraging players to learn to operate respectfully within their boundaries, encouraging discipline and awareness of themselves and others around them.

Beyond this, sports also encourages individuals to develop skills including rule comprehension, turn-taking, conflict resolution and cooperation with others – all essential life skills that extend beyond the lines of a sports court. So, when you really look at it our painted lines are a powerful teaching tool!

Whether it is a competitive tournament or a casual weekend game, sports have a unique ability to bring people together, helping to foster community connections and build stronger social bonds between friends, families and neighbours alike. From supporting health, nurturing relationships and shaping behaviour, the impact of sports reaches far beyond the boundaries of our line marking. Ultimately our small installation can be transformative, helping to improve quality of life and make positive changes across the country!
